Audio questions
Audio can now be incorprated into questions – for website based quizzes and device based quizzes. The media abilities of each device are reported to the server when the device first connects and these details are used to send the optimal audio to each device. Audio is optimised for quality and file-size. Questions can still contain formatted text and images, and answers can contain formatted text or images.
Master question content
A single piece of content can now be used across multiple questions. This allows a single large piece of text to be referenced in a set of different questions, or a single piece of audio to have multiple questions or a single image. It is also possible to combine the master media so that a piece of text, some audio and an image all together can be used across a set of questions.
Master question content can also be used to provide specific instructions for groups of questions – this is useful when combining different question types within a test.
Memory Training
Memory training is a new addition to the uHavePassed platform allowing students to access packs of memory training cards using their mobile phones. Memory training cards are an alternative and more flexible way for students to prepare for tests. Each ‘card’ has two ‘sides’ one with a memory prompt (text and/or a picture) the other with the information to be remembered (text and/or a picture). A student progresses through a pack of memory training cards indicating for each card if they could remember the expected facts etc. If the student did not remember the details – a page of re-inforcements information and tips can also be shown to the student.
The memory training system relies on the user providing truthful answers when asked about how well they are remembering the facts. This method of working is very flexible in how the user can use the system and provides the author all the flexibility they might need to help the student remember a concept.
In an upcoming version of uHavePassed students will be able to not only use authored packs of memory training cards but also create their own. Creating their own cards enables students to engage with the content both during the creation of the cards and when using memory training.
Mobile Client Improvements
The Java based mobile client has been improved with hidden performance improvements and some user interface changes:
- Variable font size – based on user preference – default font size is based on the size of the screen
- Users can submit feedback from the device – a user no longer needs to visit the website to provide feedback about using the mobile software or to report a problem
- Smaller install size
- Custom-logo in start up – a custom logo can now be included in the start-up of the mobile client software
- CLDC 1.0 compatible – now compatible with even more Java based phones
- Formatted text can support bullet points in addition to bold and new lines
- Improved line-wrapping
- Progress bar for download – with meaningful progress messages
- Multi-lingual / customisable labels – during the first sync all labels are downloaded from the server allowing multiple language support or customisable labels
- Mobile registrations have been simplified
- Left and Right buttons are configured by server – user only prompted if server suggestions are not correct
- Tested down to 128×128 screen resolution – now compatible on even more phones
- Improved memory management – see resource management below
Resource Management
Media mangement is greatly improved in uHavePassed 2.0. Images are now automatically scaled or rotated at the server to fit the required resolution of the device during synchronisation.
Audio files must be created manually but the optimal files are provided for each device based on information provided by the device.
Memory management has been improved in uHavePassed 2.0 with new algorithms deciding the optimal mix of questions and media that a user/device should get. The intelligence in these algorithms has been greatly improved to make the experience for the user even better.
Updated Sync Protocol
In preperation for the upcoming iPhone/iPod Touch and Windows Mobile clients and as a result of supporting audio questions the synchronisation protocol used by uHavePassed has been updated. This change is not visible to users, but as a consequence the synchronisation is faster, has a higher level of error checking and error reporting and can now incorporate even more content types easily and quickly.
3rd Party credentials
3rd Party sign-in mechanisms are now supprted by uHavePassed. This means that it is possible for users to login using credentials from other systems that support OpenId, OAuth or FacebookConnect.
